7 Leaf Poison Ivy. Information about poison ivy, oak, sumac and the skin rashes they cause. There may be groups of three.
Like poison ivy, this plant most often grows leaves in clusters of three, although some varieties display five or seven per cluster. Leaves are reddish in spring, green in summer, and yellow, orange, or red in fall. The plant is found throughout North America and thrives in sunny areas.
Poison ivy is not normally passed from one person to another, nor by scratching areas that itch.
Each leaf on poison ivy has three smaller leaflets with smooth or toothed edges.
They are totally different colors, sizes, shapes, and textures. The defining feature is that the leaves have a lobed, wavy appearance (also described as scalloped), similar to oak tree leaves, but more subdued. The leaves, which are smooth and shiny, are often red.
